Trend Alert: Feeling Fancy?!

For all of you ladies out there who would like to add a touch of whimsy to your spring ensembles, I have the perfect trend for you.  Fondly referred to as "Fancy Pants" by Ken Downing and Kareen Mallet, this trend is all about (you guessed it!) patterned pants.  P.S. I am including pants in bold colors in this category as well.

Not too long ago (maybe longer than I would like to admit), I remember my warm weather pant options being limited to cropped (ankle length was not available) light khaki, dark khaki, black and white.  If I wanted to go with the cargo look, I could find an olive, fatigue print and possibly navy.  That was it.  Boldly colored or patterned pants did not exist, and if they did, I can guarantee that you would probably get some crazy looks for wearing them.  I feel like I may have owned a pale pink pair at one point or another... I was such a risk taker!

Anywho, wearing "Fancy Pants" is a great way to change up your look without making to large of an investment.  You can play it safe with a solid bold color such as green, blue or pink, or jump in feet first and purchase a floral, animal print or other fun patterned pair.

Sticking to solids?  This is the perfect opportunity to colorblock, play with fun shoes or a patterned top.  A blazer or denim jacket/vest/shirt is a great way to tone down the look if you are tad nervous about the bold color.  Another option is to go for a monochromatic look.  The key for this to be successful is mixing shades of the same color or varying the textures of the pieces in the look (cableknit sweater, silk pants, etc).  If not, the look might fall flat.

Dress up a sporty pair of pants for a fun and playful look.

Subtle patterns give the sense of a solid or more neutral piece.  More importantly, this look is a great example of mixing textures in a monochromatic look.

Jumping right into a patterned pair?  Next, comes the question - what do I wear with them?
Well, since mixing patterns has become such a giant trend, the answer is... anything goes!  However, if you want to come off looking polished vs looking like you got dressed in the dark, stick to these guidelines..

1.  Keep your top solid and simple.  Stick to neutral (white, khaki, grey, navy, black) no-fuss tees or blouses.
2.  Adding a blazer or denim jacket is a great way to tone the pattern down.
3.  A textured top (cableknits, tweeds, lace, etc) is a great way to keep things exciting.
3.  When mixing patterns, remember...
                - there must be one common color between patterns
                - one pattern should be on a smaller scale than the other
                - a great way to mix is by mixing a more structured pattern with a more fluid print
5.  If you decide to wear one print head-to-toe, it is best if it is broken up by a belt, peplum or some other accent.

Bold floral and simple top... fun, but polished.

A pic of my fancy pants.  I love to break wear them with solids and color, but I am thinking about mixing some patterns soon...

Ken on Project Runway All Stars... tonight!

Tonight begins one of the most anticipated seasons of Project Runway... the All Stars version.  Personally, the anticipation has been killing me!  Thirteen of our most favorite contestants, an unbelievable prize, and my beloved Neiman's sponsoring the accessories wall... this is going to be good.  And for all of you not completely familiar with the show, the fact that Neiman's is sponsoring the wall means the style quotient just went way up... seriously!

One more very important reason that you should all watch tonight... my favorite fashion director Ken Downing is the guest judge!  If you have never seen Ken in action, this is your chance... he is fabulous!

For a refresher on the cast, check out The Cut's cliff notes version... very informative!  For more info on my favorites (they are so cool in person!) Austin Scarlett and Elisa Jiminez, check out my write up for NMdaily.

Let the drama begin...

Looking like a Lady

Trying to decipher all of the fall trends can be exhausting.  And, after we spend months pouring over the trends, the real kicker is that these fashion trends don't dictate how to dress any longer.  At least not in the sense of several decades ago when skirt lengths, pant styles, etc were mandated by the designers.   Now it is more about inspiration, personal style and what works best for your body.

As far as inspiration goes, if there is one trend this season to pay attention to, it is Ensemble Dressing.  It can also be referred to as Lady Chic or any other ladylike adjectives... I think you get the idea.  And, if you are wondering, this does not mean that you are to dress as if you are right out of the 1950's.  Although, Ken did mention that if you could walk in your pencil skirt, it wasn't tight enough!

This trend is really about looking put together.  It is about paying attention to all of the details of your outfit... making sure your outfit looks thought out versus thrown on in a mad dash because you are late for work.  You might say that this means you should pay attention to what coat you are wearing with a particular dress, or make sure that your shoes and handbags complement each other in style (they do not have to match, but it is okay if they do).

Below are some pictures from the Ken Downing fashion show at Neiman's that I attended back in October.  These demonstrate the art of Ensemble Dressing.  Just note, there are many different styles below with one thing in common... they all look like finished outfits, and that is the key!

Bright colors, scuba inspired with a pop of yellow (going to be a big color this spring)

Patterns are a great way to add some excitement to neutrals.

Zebra prints are a great way to add interest.  Also note the pattern and texture play... a chic combo.

1920's inspired Chanel... note the drop waist... another big trend this spring.

Once again playing with texture... perfect for mixing neutrals.

A previous show at Neiman's illustrating the same Lady Chic art of dressing.  I love the hat as a perfect finishing touch.

Once again, Chanel, always gorgeous.  However, easily replicated at lower price points.

Handbags, fur stoles, hats... my favorite part!

Breaking Down Bold Color with Ken Downing

Wow!  Things have been so crazy lately, I don't even know where to begin... so many trend presentations, great news and items to share.  Who knew half-day kindergarten was going to be such a time commitment!  I am going to do my best to bestow all of my fantastic news in a timely manner, so keep checking back.

*On a side note, Blogger has added new template options... very exciting!  So, you may see my site changing around a bit as I play with everything.  Feel free to let me know if you like/dislike any of the changes. :)

Ok, so back to business.  I had the opportunity to sit in on a fabulous Ken Downing runway show at the Neiman Marcus in Paramus this week.  First, I love Ken Downing.  He is amazing!  And, two, he broke down one of the biggest trends with some simple, short and very easy to follow advice.

Bold color and color blocking go hand in hand this season.  Bold color is important as an accent for the neutral lovers out there and it is just as fabulous when put together with other bold colors for the more adventurous fashionista.  Or, you can happily settle somewhere in the middle and add touches when and where you feel comfortable.

The only challenge is how to mix up the bold colors, and how do you know which is the right bold color to add?  First you have to take your coloring into account.  Only you know the colors the make your eyes pop.  And two, stick to color families - cool tones or warm tones.  It makes things so much easier and and the colors blend better.  This helps to achieve a more polished look.

Ken's advice builds on these initial concepts.  For warm tones... reds, pinks, purples... imagine roses.  All of the colors that blend together.  Even a painting would work.  The way the artist blends different shades of the same color.  For cool tones, think of a peacock feather.  The deep blues, greens, teal... sometimes a bright blue - so gorgeous, right?!  Use these image to help pick the colors that you would wear together.  You shouldn't stress too much about things being perfect.  As long as the color combo is pleasing to the eye, and the colors look like they belong together you are going to look super chic!

Ken's main focus was on the red and pink family.  He is obsessed with burgundy this fall.  He even created a lip and nail color exclusive to Neiman's!  However, the cool tones are still big as well as other color families.  It really all depends what colors you prefer and what your comfort level is with color.

Another trend that you may pick up on in these photos is "Lady Chic".  The polished, put-together look is very important this season as well.  I will touch on that later, but when putting together your colorful ensembles; keep in mind that the look is very tailored right now... very Grace Kelly meets the 70's!

Packing to meet Rachel Zoe

I am leaving for LA today!  Meeting Rachel Zoe and Ken Downing tomorrow, and the booties are ready to go...

Animal print, brown and my Chelsea style taupe pair...

Yes, I am going to be gone for a very short amount of time, but this isn't about packing smart.  It is about having options.  I am not quite sure what my time in LA is going to bring, therefore I must have things to wear for whatever comes my way. Basically I packed maxi's, a tunic for exploring during the day, and layering pieces.  The only thing missing is my gorgeous floral maxi dress, but it is being altered.  I am picking it up two hours before I leave for the airport!  I may be a bit of a procrastinator...

I can't forget my jewelry!  I would have liked to purchase a few new pieces to freshen things up, but I am working on a budget.  All of my go-to pieces must come with me...

Well, I thought I was ready, and then I found out a few details... Wednesday night a cocktail party is being held at the Beverly Hill's Neiman Marcus.  This is to celebrate and promote Rachel Zoe's new clothing line.  The best part is that I get to be a VIP for a day!  My hair and makeup is being done by Neiman's, and (rumor has it) that I am having a private styling session with Rachel and Ken... amazing!!!

This means I might need a few more options since my plans have changed a bit...  white jeans, a white button-down, a striped button-down, wedges and flip flops.  Okay, I think I am packed.

See you in LA...
