Trend Alert: Feeling Fancy?!

For all of you ladies out there who would like to add a touch of whimsy to your spring ensembles, I have the perfect trend for you.  Fondly referred to as "Fancy Pants" by Ken Downing and Kareen Mallet, this trend is all about (you guessed it!) patterned pants.  P.S. I am including pants in bold colors in this category as well.

Not too long ago (maybe longer than I would like to admit), I remember my warm weather pant options being limited to cropped (ankle length was not available) light khaki, dark khaki, black and white.  If I wanted to go with the cargo look, I could find an olive, fatigue print and possibly navy.  That was it.  Boldly colored or patterned pants did not exist, and if they did, I can guarantee that you would probably get some crazy looks for wearing them.  I feel like I may have owned a pale pink pair at one point or another... I was such a risk taker!

Anywho, wearing "Fancy Pants" is a great way to change up your look without making to large of an investment.  You can play it safe with a solid bold color such as green, blue or pink, or jump in feet first and purchase a floral, animal print or other fun patterned pair.

Sticking to solids?  This is the perfect opportunity to colorblock, play with fun shoes or a patterned top.  A blazer or denim jacket/vest/shirt is a great way to tone down the look if you are tad nervous about the bold color.  Another option is to go for a monochromatic look.  The key for this to be successful is mixing shades of the same color or varying the textures of the pieces in the look (cableknit sweater, silk pants, etc).  If not, the look might fall flat.

Dress up a sporty pair of pants for a fun and playful look.

Subtle patterns give the sense of a solid or more neutral piece.  More importantly, this look is a great example of mixing textures in a monochromatic look.

Jumping right into a patterned pair?  Next, comes the question - what do I wear with them?
Well, since mixing patterns has become such a giant trend, the answer is... anything goes!  However, if you want to come off looking polished vs looking like you got dressed in the dark, stick to these guidelines..

1.  Keep your top solid and simple.  Stick to neutral (white, khaki, grey, navy, black) no-fuss tees or blouses.
2.  Adding a blazer or denim jacket is a great way to tone the pattern down.
3.  A textured top (cableknits, tweeds, lace, etc) is a great way to keep things exciting.
3.  When mixing patterns, remember...
                - there must be one common color between patterns
                - one pattern should be on a smaller scale than the other
                - a great way to mix is by mixing a more structured pattern with a more fluid print
5.  If you decide to wear one print head-to-toe, it is best if it is broken up by a belt, peplum or some other accent.

Bold floral and simple top... fun, but polished.

A pic of my fancy pants.  I love to break wear them with solids and color, but I am thinking about mixing some patterns soon...

Oh, Leather, I can't get you out of my head!

There is a specific topic that I have been wanting to write about for some time, and have not had a chance.  I was going to pass on it all together since it is already mid-April, but I keep dreaming about a certain Vince dress...  So, let's talk about leather.  For a few seasons and going forward, the leather jacket is as important as a blazer in a woman's wardrobe.  It has taken the place of the cardigan and gives your outfit that unexpected twist and a little edge, plus who doesn't love the feel of a fabulous buttery (real or faux) leather jacket!

Leather has been slowly moving into other wardrobe categories... first it was leggings and skinny pants and now dresses and skirts.  I can't help but covet a sleek pair of black leather skinny pants in the Fall, however, there is something even more appealing about the warm caramel tones used in leather for the Spring.

And now, the Vince dress... a beautiful leather shift that is a-mah-zing!  I can't help to dream about all of the different ways that I would wear it... layered with tights, looking sleek with pumps, add some caged sandals for a bit of edge or maybe make it more demure with a pair of pointy toe flats and a cardi...

And for those who may want a more conservative approach to the leather dress, there is an equally fabulous Tory Burch dress...

Not really a dress person, well, then try the leather skirt... just as versatile as the dress.  You just need find the appropriate style for you!  This Alice & Olivia skirt is for the fun-loving girl...

... and this Tory Burch pencil skirt is for those who would prefer a more sophisticated look.

I can't forget these very fabulous red leather skinny pants from Zara... just because I adore them!

This season leather comes in many styles and at many price points.  Leather is definitely an investment, but this style isn't going anywhere any time soon.  Therefore, it just might be worth the hefty price tag!  Other stores to try for less expensive leather looks are Urban Outfitters, Topshop, and Neiman Marcus
for more conservative pieces

An Effortlessly Chic Day at the Hamptons

I was recently asked where the inspiration comes from for the outfits that I put together on my website.  And, honestly, it comes from all over the place.  Sometimes the weather inspires me, a group of colors in nature, a photograph, a song, a very cool piece of clothing or just the idea of attending a specific event... it really depends on the day.  So, I thought that I would try to share with everyone the inspiration behind one of my outfits...

The most important thing to know is that I am completely taken with maxi dresses and skirts right now... a slight maxi obsession!  Then, when it was warm enough to open my car windows not too long ago, I became very excited for summer dressing.  I also happened upon some photos of Tory Burch's home and became totally obsessed with her use of color!

Then I found this Tory Burch dress, which I am completely in love with... subdued color - more my style...

This dress got me thinking about the casual chicness of the Hamptons... polo matches, shopping, the beach, cool little restaurants...

With all of these images floating through my head (and some that I dreamed up), I thought about what would be a great outfit that I could wear and look very chic in the Hamptons... The dress is a good base. It can be dressed up or down, and I am definitely all about versatility.  I also thought about adding more color or pattern, but that is not me.  I like things that are more understated, so I chose an outfit with a little color mixed with neutrals.  I also decided on more of a daytime look (it would take me further)... I paired the Tory Burch dress with an Acne anorak J.Crew shoes and handbag, an Alexis Bittar ring, a Cartier tank watch (of course!) and I almost forgot a pair of MJB aviators...

Supposed to be in grey, but the image is no longer available.

Going to New Lengths

There is a certain skirt that I have been completely obsessed with since I first saw the Tory Burch Resort preview last summer.  It is a beautiful blue chiffon skirt with an Indian print... it is perfect and brings out my inner hippie (I will wear it and listen to the Dead - reliving the memories of the one & only Grateful Dead concert that I was able to attend)!  There is one problem, though, it is a maxi skirt... a floor grazing maxi skirt!  The question being, how and when am I ever going to wear this skirt that I have been drooling over for the last 6 months!

First of all, it is January.  It has been snowing every other day... the snow from right after Christmas still has not melted.  It isn't like I can wear the skirt while I am scraping off my car, or better yet, when I have to trudge through a slush covered parking lot.  So is it worth the purchase?  Well, in a couple of months the snow will melt, the temps will rise and it would look really pretty with a couple of layers and some boots... it would also look awesome with just a white tank and flip flops... Oh, and if I ever go to a party or to some exotic locale, it would absolutely perfect to wear!

So, my question to you... will you adopt the new length this spring?  Maxi dresses and skirts are everywhere - part of the 70's invasion!  We have been bombarded lately with all of the different ways to
wear them now and how to wear them later, but is it really practical?  Maybe if you live in LA or Miami, but for the rest of us?  The other problem is that trying to accomplish your daily errands or while you race to catch the train or subway, this might not be the best piece of clothing to wear... but, if you save this look for a lazy day, a party or just when you want to feel pretty, it might just work!

My advice to you, don't dismiss this trend until you give it some thought.  There are so many different styles available right now, you will probably find something that is perfect for you and your lifestyle!

A New Denim Love

I have been dying to tell you about a new love of mine... a denim love!  The new high-waisted skinny from J.Crew.  They really are amazing!  Lightweight, stretchy, soft... plus the waist.... I have forgotten how nice it is to actually have pants that cover my underwear when I quickly bend down to take care of the kids.

These jeans are perfect to wear with flats, heels or boots and so comfortable that you will feel like you are wearing leggings.  The high waist allows you to wear shorter tops with no worries, but don't tuck anything and wear cowboy boots at the same time... vaguely reminiscent of Footloose.

They actually remind me a lot of the Tory Burch denim, another love of mine!  However, these are a bit easier on the wallet... I definitely recommend taking a look.  And, for those of you who think you are too old to wear these jeans, my mom and I both bought a pair.... she looks better in them than I do!  I am anxiously awaiting to see if these will be available in white... I have great plans for these jeans!

On another note, back to my Tory Burch jeans... there is a new style that I am very excited to try... the High Rise Flare Jean!  I saw these last September and immediately fell in love.  They are a very flattering fit (long and lean as opposed to really tight with a big flare) and a perfect investment for the '70's invasion this Spring.  I am loving the pink, but I hope a they are coming out with a dark denim pair as well!

P.S.  The flare jeans are a perfect way to start wearing all of those shorter, fitted cardigans and tee's that you put away because you felt funny wearing them with skinny jeans!

Oh, what a night!

Tuesday night (8.3.10) I had to most amazing opportunity to attend a Tory Burch event with many well-known bloggers & style editors!  The event was to celebrate the launch of Tory’s new denim line!  I had so much fun perusing the store, looking at the fabulous Fall clothes, jewelry, handbags and most importantly the new denim!
The new denim line is OOC (out of control) as Rachel Zoe would say!  I was able to look, touch & try on the various styles and I love them all!  There is the legging, the skinny, the straight leg, the tomboy, bootcut & trouser cut... not to mention really fun printed denim (as seen in the picture above).  There are so many options, you are sure to find the one that is right for you.
Then, if that wasn’t enough, we were all able to style our own look with the denim... so much fun!  My look is pictured above... and I love it!  I would totally rock this outfit!  I would just add a bag like the Louiisa Messenger (if I could just get it in black), or there is this great oversized black foldover clutch that I saw in the store that I LOVE!  Then, of course, you need some shades...
Then to have some fun with all of this, pictures of all of our outfits have been posted on Tory’s facebook page (on “the latest” tab).  You are supposed to vote for your favorite one... so please vote for Style Direction!  I would love to win, but I am up against some stiff competition!
It was a great night and I highly recommend checking out the Tory Burch denim before you buy your new jeans for the Fall!  If you are interested, the links for the pieces I used are below...

New & Fabulous Bags

Well, it has officially begun... the Fall clothing season, that is.  With that, bring on the deluge of the “new, must-have” coats, shoes, jewelry & of course, handbags!
However, continuing with the overriding theme of the last several seasons, there really isn’t one “it” bag this Fall.  There are definitely trends, but it is really about you picking the right bag for your style, lifestyle & wardrobe.
As a mother and stylist, I always lean towards bigger bags, period.  They can be structured or slouchy, it doesn’t matter as long as they are oversized.  With that said, the first bags that I have been drawn to this season are satchels and totes.  Not only are they nice and roomy, but they all come with the longer shoulder strap, so in a pinch you can throw the bag on messenger style and ta da... hands free!  A great feature for women on the go!
The color is another factor in my attraction to these bags.  I LOVE the bright blue... I keep thinking how it would pop with black, grey, navy, camel...  The green is also a beautiful color for the colder months, and a little different.  The neutral brown bag has a nice rich color that doesn’t strike me as being the typical “brown bag”, and it will go with everything.  In other words, I would like all of these bags, please!
Who makes these bags, you ask... well, none other than my faves... Tory Burch... the blue bag is the Dayton Messenger, the neutral bag is the Norah Satchel, and the green tote is the Exhibitor Mega Tote from J.Crew.  Once again, a great take on classic styling, fairly affordable (as far as designer handbags go), and they are great for everyday wear!

Wishing for cooler weather already!?!

Well, these booties are making me wish it were September instead of the first day of Summer!  I instantly fell in love with these Tory Burch booties a few weeks ago when I spied them from across the shoe department.  They are just the perfect blend of clog/bootie/everyday shoe.  Just imagine these shoes with a flirty dress or your favorite pair of boyfriend jeans... really, your options are endless.  And, with a 3 inch heel and a platform, you could actually wear them running around town and not have to worry about twisting an ankle!
They would be a perfect addition to your wardrobe... wear now on cooler days, and then wear them all of the time in the Fall.  The best part about it, these shoes are going to blend in with everything you already own... trust me!  It is time to start saving your pennies!!!
